For its sixth issue, Ouch Records, publishes a synthesis, more than a compilation, of the Zanzibara collection in collaboration with the ethnomusicologist Werner Graebner, director of the collection.

Published in 2005 by Buda Musique, the Zanzibara collection (9 CDs) is devoted to Swahili folk music from the East coast of Africa, from Lamu, Monbasa, Tanga, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar to the Comoros. In its editorial approach, it can be compared to the Ethiopian collection led by Francis Falcetto: rare and exciting music, booklets richly documented. It consists mainly of archives recorded between the years 1920 and 1980.

The Zanzibara Volume 1 compilation features 14 tracks chosen by Werner Graebner.

“The selections, he explains, was to be representative of the series and its individual volumes, but also present this in a meaningful way. I have tried to give individual sides a coherent feeling and flow, while also making sense”

The compliation “is a mix of archival recordings, either from record companies producing in East Africa from the 1950s to the 1980s, and, for Tanzania mainly, recordings done by the national radio. These are supplemented by contemporary recordings of artists of special merit, either well-established or emerging/new artists.”
