Madness Tenors – Be Jazz for Jazz (LP)

After ten years devoted to the Ethio jazz and punk rock (Ethio Crunch) of uKandanZ and to the reworked music of the Stooges with the trio Bunktilt dig The Stooges, this new album Madness Tenors marks the return of saxophonist Lionel Martin to jazz. Jazz, with chiseled melodies, inspired by world music and different currents of jazz, but with a game that retains energy, urgency, specific to rock and punk. An invigorating and intelligent jazz, that would not have denied a Lester Bowie and which is part of the return of a live, scenic jazz, propelled by artists such as Shabaka Hutchings and Kamasi Washington.

In 2014 on the Bulgarian festival of Stara Zagora, Lionel Martin met the saxophonist Georges Garzone. This encounter with the maestro – still active with his band The Fringe, who played alongside Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman, Danilo Perez, Joe Lovano …. And who trained Joshua Redman and James Carter – will be decisive for Lionel Martin. At that time he was exhausted by the rock scene thinking of hanging up his saxophone, Georges Garzone, congratulating him for his energy and the originality of his style dissuaded him and advised him to devote himself to meditation and work Of his instrument …

From this meeting was born the Madness Tenors project. Around the two saxophonists, there are two companions of Lionel Martin, Mario Stantchev on piano, Benoit Keller on double bass, and the choice of the drummer naturally focused on Ramon Lopez. Sculptor, exceptional colourist, percussionist as well, Ramon Lopez is as at ease in the free jazz as in the music of the world.

The album recorded at the end of a concert given at the festival “A Vaulx Jazz” in March 2014, is titled Be Jazz For Jazz echoing the superb Jazz Before Jazz, duo of Lionel Martin and Mario Stantchev dedicated to the Music of the precursor of the jazz that is Louis Moreau Gottschalk (Label Cristal Records – 2016)
